Angel Road Infant and Nursery School

Physical Education

The Principles of our Curriculum:

- Knowledge is valued and specified     - Knowledge is well sequenced

 - Knowledge is taught to be remembered

P.E. is highly valued at Angel Road, EYFS have physical development embedded in their curriculum; Nursery children use the sports facilities at the school and Reception children have weekly lesson with one of our specialist PE instructors. We deliver a progressive programme, following the Get Set 4 P.E. scheme, developing knowledge and skill across a variety of disciplines to ensure high quality and strong outcomes. Lessons are planned to be inclusive, safe and challenging with a high activity level. Children learn to apply their developing knowledge and skill as well as develop an understanding for decision making and problem solving. PE lessons also focus on developing an understanding and awareness of leading a healthy lifestyle and the behaviour of being active. New vocabulary is taught using visual aids and modelling to encourage language development and comprehension.

Collaboration, respect, empathy and honesty are among the social and emotional skills that are cultivated and expanded as the children progress through the school. We believe this provides children with a developing awareness and skill set to become successful citizens within their future career, personal life and the world around them. This focus also positively supports children’s well-being and emotional resilience.

In Early Years the physical skills of agility, balance and co-ordination are developed. These fundamental movement skills are advanced in Year 1. In Year 2, the skills are honed into an understanding of the difference between invasion, net and wall and striking and fielding games and how some skills transfer. At Key Stage 2, skills are developed into a sports focused curriculum that includes handball, tennis and cricket. The curriculum also offers gymnastics, dance, yoga and OAA opportunities. KS2 children also have swimming lessons in one of the terms throughout each year.

We aim to ensure maximum engagement and inclusion; all children are encouraged to participate in sport beyond the curriculum, in lunch time, before and after school clubs, internal school events, Trust wide sports festivals and inter-school competitions.

The School Games Mark and Sporting Stars Award is currently being evidenced and applied for. The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme for Key Stage 2 launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition in school and the community. The Sporting Stars is the Key stage 1 equivalent award.
