Personal Development
The Principles of our Curriculum:
- Knowledge is valued and specified - Knowledge is well sequenced
- Knowledge is taught to be remembered
At Angel Road, our Personal Development (PD) curriculum covers personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education; behaviours; relationships; welfare, health and wellbeing (mental, physical and economic); safeguarding; spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development; the promotion of fundamental British values; and careers. It prepares children for the opportunities, responsibilities, challenges and experiences of life and equips them with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies needed for success. As part of a whole-school approach, our PD curriculum develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and responsible citizens who contribute and the skills, language and strategies they need to live fulfilling, healthy, safe, productive and balanced lives.
Our PD curriculum provides children with opportunities to explore and clarify their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities as well as to reflect on communication and respectful challenge around the sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future. It also provides opportunities to develop positive personal attributes such as resilience, self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy. It supports children to manage their emotions, to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions.
Our PD learning is taught in 7 themes which ensures we meet all the statutory requirements, however, our PD curriculum is adaptive, relevant to our pupils and local environment and changes to reflect the rapidly changing world in which our pupils are living and learning and links with our science, geography, history and RE and Worldviews curricula. PD is taught in a way which is complementary to our school’s underpinning values of ‘Happy, Healthy, Aiming High’. Our PD planning and resourcing takes into consideration the age and stage of all our children, including those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds. We have high ambitions for all our children; we scaffold learning when needed so that all children achieve well in PD from Nursery to Year 6.
