Angel Road Infant and Nursery School

Music

The Principles of our Curriculum:

- Knowledge is valued and specified

- Knowledge is well sequenced

 - Knowledge is taught to be remembered

Music is a subject at Angel Road which brings real joy, excitement and wonder. Our music curriculum will provide opportunities for children to develop a deep understanding of music, musicality and the technical skills needed to develop their own musical expression.

Children will learn about the dimensions of music and will build upon this each year through a stimulating and diverse collection of music, such as jazz, western and non-western classical music, folk music and more. In some units, our music learning links to other areas of our curriculum. For example, in year 5, children learn about Nigerian drumming at the same time as learning about art from the same region.

A core component of our music curriculum is singing. Our Angel Road children will experience a range of songs which will be repeated, allowing children to develop their singing skills and take part in deliberate practice. Children will reflect on the other elements of music needed to make a 'song' and will work with their peers to build their confidence, communication skills and expression through performance.

As well as a taught music curriculum, Angel Road children have many other opportunities to develop their music development. We are proud to offer a range of additional clubs, such as a choir and ukelele club. We meet regularly as a school to sing in an ensemble and children across the school have opportunities to perform to an audience in productions and assemblies.

As such, teachers are making careful adaptations to the curriculum to ensure that knowledge and skills gaps are taught first. We support children with careful scaffolds and ensure that key vocabulary is explicitly taught. We have high ambition for all children in music, including those with SEND.
