Angel Road Infant and Nursery School

History

The Principles of our Curriculum:

- Knowledge is valued and specified     - Knowledge is well sequenced

 - Knowledge is taught to be remembered

At Angel Road, our history curriculum aspires to ignite our children’s love of this subject, creating curious and knowledgeable young people who hold a good understanding and essential knowledge ready for their future learning, whether this is Early Years to Year 1, or Year 6 to Key Stage 3.

Ours is a progressive curriculum that has been carefully planned and sequenced, to build factual knowledge alongside the historical skills required.  We study British history through the themes of monarchy, empire and democracy and extend this knowledge to the history of the wider world and how this has impacted on modern-day history. Key figures of historical importance are studied in detail e.g. Gandhi and Emiline Pankhurst.

With each learning sequence, we teach specific vocabulary which is built upon and used within each lesson to secure understanding and create links, which are carried across other subjects, so preparing children for future studies in proceeding year groups. For example, the term monarchy is first taught and used in Year 1 and is revisited constantly with children throughout their history experience with us.

We use links across all subject areas, promoting an increasing schema for every child. For example, the unit on the Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Vikings is also studied in geography when we look at settlements, Northern Europe and the British Isles. In art, we do some work based on the Sutton Hoo treasures.

We believe in enriching our curriculum further by incorporating trips that further extend the children’s experience in our areas of study. For example, Year 2 visit Strangers Hall in Norwich to learn about the Tudors, Year 4 visit Norwich Castle and Year 6 visit Gressenhall Workhouse to experience what life was like for an evacuee.
