Angel Road Infant and Nursery School

Geography

The Principles of our Curriculum:

- Knowledge is valued and specified      - Knowledge is well sequenced

 - Knowledge is taught to be remembered

Our Geography curriculum allows children to develop their knowledge of the world.

Through research-led pedagogy, Angel Road children will learn about key geographical concepts, including place, the environment and how the world is interconnected.

Our geography curriculum aims to develop the children into ‘geographers’ where they consider: what geographers do, what they look for and how they interpret their observations.  Furthermore, our geography curriculum develops the children’s understanding of the world around them, develops their sense of identity; knowing who they are and think about global issues, such as pollution and globalisation.

We aim to provide the children with an awareness of the world around us and how we can help look after it. Through our geography curriculum, children will make links to people around the world and find a love of the continents and the places within them.

In addition, children experience field work which includes trips to the coast to see coastal erosion and other key physical aspects of geography. Furthermore, they are given opportunities to go on walks around the local area, draw maps and develop their local knowledge.

Within geography, children begin to look at maps in Nursery and the early years, they continue to build their prior skills and knowledge of this each year until they leave Angel Road schools in Year 6, ready for the next stage of their education.

We use the Primary Knowledge Curriculum to support our planning and resourcing for all children, including those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds. We have high ambitions for all our children; we scaffold learning when needed so that all children achieve well in geography.
